KARACHI: Sindh Excise and Taxation Department collected Rs6,831.992 million during first quarter (July-September) of this fiscal year, showing an increase of Rs589.663m from the corresponding period last year when collection stood at Rs6,242.329m.
Official sources giving details of revenue collection during July-Sept period said that all the seven taxes collected by (E&TD) recorded fabulous growth during period under review having an impact of 10 per cent increase in overall collection over last year.
The oldest revenue collecting arm of the provincial government — E&TD — during first three months of current fiscal collected Rs234.927m more towards motor vehicle tax at Rs956.546m as against Rs721.619m collected in the same period last year.
Similarly, excise duty collection stood higher by Rs132.414m at Rs632.788m compared to Rs500.374m collected in the corresponding period last year.
The Infrastructure Cess collection increased by Rs146.255m at Rs4360.488m as against Rs4214.233m collected in the same period last year. The collection of infrastructure cess is directly linked with the value of imports therefore the expected growth the officials said was not achieved.
The collection of property and professional tax normally starts at a slow pace during any fiscal and officials believe that since both the taxes have to be verified physically therefore it takes time to gain momentum.
Consequently, the collection of property tax during first quarter of current fiscal made a nominal growth of Rs58.916m at Rs747.301m as against Rs688.385m collected in the same period last year.
Similarly, professional tax collection also made a modest rise of Rs4.702m at Rs84.499m compared to Rs79.797m collected in the corresponding period last year.
Talking to Dawn Director General E&TD Shoaib Siddiqui said that up to 80pc of revenue collection made by his department comes from Motor Vehicle Tax and Infrastructure Cess and the recovery of both the taxes is 100pc.
He further said that under the directives of the provincial Excise and Taxation minister Mukaish Kumar Chawala the department is focusing on collection of property and professional taxes so that revenue collection from these two heads of taxes could be increased by 25 to 30pc this fiscal.
The DG further said that both the taxes have to be monitored on ground by making door-to-door visits and it will take some time before the department develops full data of these two taxes.
