Court sends Musharraf on 14-day remand

ISLAMABAD - A local court Friday sent former military ruler Pervez Musharraf to jail on fourteen days judicial remand in Ghazi Abdul Rashid murder case.
Judicial Magistrate Malik Amman sent him on judicial remand after police pleaded before the court in this connection.
The court also accepted another application seeking exemption for Musharraf’s appearance before the court in the case on security grounds. Earlier, the magistrate refused to grant physical remand of Musharraf in the case when police submitted an application seeking five days physical custody of the accused. But, the magistrate rejected this application, saying that the accused should be produced before the court for physical custody. On this juncture, senior police officials informed the court that Musharraf could not be brought in the court due to high security concerns. After hearing the arguments, the magistrate sent the former president to jail on 14 days judicial remand. In Ghazi murder case, Aamir Nadeem Tabish has been appointed as public prosecutor.
Meanwhile, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday turned down a petition seeking court directives for placing Pervez Musharraf’s name on Exit Control List (ECL). Acting Chief Justice IHC Justice Riaz Ahmad Khan dismissed the petition moved by Haroon Rashid, the complainant of Ghazi Abdul Rashid murder case.
The petitioner moved the court through his counsel Tariq Asad advocate and cited Secretary Ministry of Interior as respondent in his petition. During the hearing, advocate Tariq stated in the petition that a case had been registered by the order of IHC against Pervez Musharraf under Sections 302 and 109 on the petition of Haroon Rashid for the murder of his father Ghazi abdul Rasid Shheed and his grandmother who had been killed in the brutal operation by the order of General (R) Pervez Musharraf. The petitioner contended that it is learnt that Musharraf is planning to leave Pakistan before Eid-ul-Azha. He also referred Hussain Haqqani who had assured the court to return but never came back. Similarly, if Musharraf leaves Pakistan, it would not be possible to bring him back, he maintained.
The counsel told the court that the petitioner has also requested the Inspector General of Police to expedite investigation so that the challan may be placed before the court and trial be conducted.
However, he added that police is reluctant to investigate and take action against Musharraf in the case.
Therefore, he prayed to the court that it may direct the Ministry of Interior to place Pervez Musharraf’s name on the Exit Control List (ECL) in the interest of justice and fair-play.
