Speaking on the occasion, he directed Wapda to accelerate work on small and medium-sized dams in all the four provinces, besides expediting construction activities on other mega projects. He said that construction work on Naulong and Winder dams located in Balochistan be started immediately. He directed Wapda Chairman expedite work on Nai Gaj Dam in Sindh, Ghabir Dam in Punjab and Kurram Tangi Dam in KPK and FATA.
Briefing the Federal Secretary, Wapda chairman Syed Raghib Abbas Shah assured that Naulong, Winder, Ghabir and Nai Gaj Dam projects would be completed in three years, provided the funds are made available for the purpose. On completion of these projects, about 650,000 acre feet of water would be stored, enough to irrigate more than 130,000 acres of land, he added. The chairman further informed that Kaitu weir of Kurram Tangi Dam will also be completed in two years to help irrigate 16,400 acres of land.
It was stated by Wapda that these projects were almost stands still for want of funds. Secretary Water and Power assured that appropriate funds would be arranged for these projects to be completed in three years.
Naulong Dam Project located in Jhal Magsi district of Balochistan has the gross water storage capacity of 242,000 acre feet with command area of 47,000 acres, while Winder Dam located in Lasbela district of Balochistan will store 36,484 acre feet of water and irrigate 10,000 acres of land. Ghabir Dam located in Chakwal district of Punjab, with a gross storage capacity of 66,200 acre feet, will irrigate 15,000 acres of land. Similarly, Nai Gah Dam being constructed in Dadu district of Sindh has gross storage capacity of 300,000 acre feet with command area of 57,800 acres.
