Government Announces Hike in Power Tariff

Islamabad: The government on Monday issued the notification of hike in power tariff across the country. The new prices will take effect from October 1. According to notification, the consumers using electricity up to 200 units will be exempted from the price hike. The electricity price for the consumers using 201 to 300 has been increased Rs 5.89 after which they will have to pay Rs14 per unit against the old rate of Rs8.15 per unit. Similarly, the Rs3.67 per unit has been increased for the consumers utilizing 301 to 700 units, thus they will be now paying Rs 16 per unit instead of Rs12.33. For the consumers using more than 700 units will the price has been increased 2.93 per unit and they will now pay Rs18 instead of Rs15.07 per unit. For the domestic consumers having ‘Time of Use’ meters the price could be increased by Rs4 per unit in peak hours. Water and Power ministry sources said that the recent hike in the power tariff will help government to generate revenue from the consumers and slash subsidy. It is pertinent to mention that hike in power tariff is one of the preconditions of the loan deal the government hammered out with the International Monitory Fund (IMF)
