ISLAMABAD/LAHORE - World Tourism Day (WTD) was marked throughout the country with different exhibitions, conferences, moots and get-togethers to put light on the potential tourism industry Pakistan carries.
Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Pervaiz Rashid on Friday said that Pakistan was passing through a critical time as bomb attacks, target killings and militancy have left a major impact on society and culture. However, he made it loud and clear that things would be normalized soon.
The federal government is here to support the provincial governments to ensure peace and stability in the country.
Pervez Rashid was speaking to a large number of people including foreigners at a World Tourism Day event organized by Capital Development Authority (CDA) held here at the Pak-China Friendship Centre on Friday.
The minister, who was the chief guest on the occasion, said that tourism helps promote friendly and cordial relations between nations and is vital for boosting economic activity, income generation, job creation and poverty alleviation.
Tourism has 10 per cent share in the global economy and it makes the world more stable by creating goodwill and brings people together from far off places, he added.
The minister openly admitted that things were not good for tourism in Pakistan and sought support of people while fulfilling their responsibility of making Pakistan a peaceful and safe country. It is our responsibility to make Pakistan peaceful and safe, "Pervaiz said adding, "When Pakistan will become secure then we can invite tourists to visit Pakistan and enjoy its scenic beauty, mountains, lakes, cultural sites and centuries old historical places.
The minister observed that Pakistan has a tremendous potential to boost tourism on a sustainable basis because of its landscapes and diverse culture, which is on display from Khyber to Karachi. Pakistan is the land of 5000 year old Indus valley civilization, has rich traditions of art and architecture and its people are hard working and talented and it is blessed with four seasons.
Pervaiz Rashid said that a tourist can dare visit another country for adventure, bear difficulties of travel and can spend nights without facilities but if his life is in danger than it is another matter.
"It is responsibility of us all to make Pakistan peaceful and safe," said Pervaiz adding, "When Pakistan will become secure then we can invite tourists to visit Pakistan and enjoy its scenic beauty, mountains, lakes, cultural sites and centuries old historical places.
In Lahore, Minister for Tourism Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan visited a cultural show in connection with World Tourism Day under the auspices of Tourism Development Corporation of Punjab (TDCP) at Alhamra Arts Centre.
He said a nation could prosper only through knowledge economy. “Singapore and Japan are tremendous examples of this ground reality,” he added.
